Birmingham City Council could assess if speed bumps can be installed in several roads in Stirchley to slow traffic. A petition is circulating begging the council to look at the move as residents say drivers are failing to obey 20mph speed limits.

Residents claim some motorists still drive too irresponsibly along Dogpool Lane, Avenue Road, and Dads Lane, all of which have the 20mph limit. Half a dozen vehicles were damaged following a crash on the afternoon of October 14 on Dogpool Lane, near a GP and a mental health centre. A man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and assaulting a police officer in connection with the incident.

Local Jennifer Hall, a student nurse associate at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, said three cars, including her own and two belonging to friends, were written off during the incident. She is behind a petition urging Birmingham City Council to consider speed bumps.

After being contacted by Birmingham Live, a spokesperson from Birmingham City Council said: “We thank Ms Hall and the residents of Dogpool Lane, Dads Lane and Avenue Road in Stirchley for their engagement. Road safety is a major priority for the City and we take such concerns seriously.

"Issues such as the installation of speed cushions can be considered under the Councils Road Harm Reduction Strategy, and we will work with colleagues in Transportation and Connectivity to assess the scheme.”

Miss Hall,45, said: "This petition is important to me because I want to keep our community safe. If my car hadn't been parked outside my house, my son would have been killed, and my car would have gone through my front window. I want to make a change because the speed that they drive down my road is appalling."

Peter Bloomer, who signed the petition, said: "Measures need to be taken to slow down traffic along Dogpool Lane and the stretch past Dads Lane. There is also an issue of cars cutting through Hobson, Kitchener, Cecil, Fashoda to 'avoid' traffic jams.

"Either / and speed bumps / speed camera's could be used. I think residents and supporters should build up this petition and present it to the council to demand action."
