These are the countries that drink the most wine

These are the countries that guzzle the most wine per member of the population every year.

Data from the Wine Institute found that the Vatican City is top of the wine-drinking league, with the average resident quaffing an impressive 54.26 litres every year.

The diminutive nation has a population of less than 500 people but an older age group, an above average amount of ceremonial meals and a decent few glugs of communion wine means that their consumption per person is by far the highest worldwide.

Another tiny European country – Andorra – comes in second place, where citizens see off a not insubstantial 46.26 litres annually.

We’re a nation known for our ability to put away the booze, but the UK came in a pitiful 16th place.

The U.S. consumes the largest amount of wine in total – more than three billion litres a year – but adjusted for population, that’s a mere 10 litres per person.
