Country music star Shania Twain has announced she will release her first album in 15 years.

The first single, Life's About To Get Good, will drop in June, while the as-yet untitled album is set to appear in September.

The 51-year-old singer took an extended break from the music scene as she came to terms with her split from her ex-husband, Mutt Lange.

Twain was married to the music producer for 15 years until she discovered that he was having an affair with her best friend, Marie-Anne Thiebaud.

It was Marie-Anne's husband, Frederic Thiebaud, who broke the news to Twain. Both couples went through a painful separation in 2010, and as Twain and Frederic found comfort in one another, romance blossomed between the pair. They were married in 2011.

Now in a happier place in her life, Twain said she has achieved the creative independence she longed for.

"It's been such a long time since I put out a studio album," she told Entertainment Tonight. "I wrote the whole album myself, so it's a real statement of independence.

"Creative independence is something that I haven't had in a really long time. It was really scary taking that leap. The album's done, and I feel really good," she said. "The first single is so optimistic and hopeful — regardless of how bad life could get. I really needed that message."

The five-time Grammy winner has been working with new producers Jake Gosling, Ron Aniello and Jacquire King and songwriter-producer Matthew Koma on the new album.

It's the fifth album for the country star after Shania Twain (1993), The Woman in Me (1995), Come On Over (1997) and Up! which topped the Billboard charts in 2002.

Twain will debut her new single at the Stagecoach Festival in Indio, California on 29 April.
