A road in County Durham is expected to be closed for several hours following a serious crash, police said.

The collision, involving a motorcycle and a car, took place on Sunday, June 2, on Shincliffe Lane, near Shincliffe Garden Centre on the B1198. Emergency services were at the scene and officers urged drivers to find alternative routes.

The North East Ambulance Service said one person was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary with serious injuries, and a second person was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham. Durham Constabulary shared news about the incident on its social media channels.

It said: "Officers are currently on scene at a serious RTC on Shincliffe Lane near Shincliffe Garden Centre on the B1198.

"The road is closed to traffic and pedestrians at Shincliffe traffic lights and the junction to Sherburn House near A181. It is anticipated the road will be closed for several hours. Please find an alternative route."

A spokesman for North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 12.28 today to attend a road traffic collision on Shincliffe Lane involving a motorcycle and a car. We dispatched a paramedic ambulance and doctor who took one patient, with serious injuries, to Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle and a clinical team leader, who took a second patient to University Hospital of North Durham."
