A couple whose eyes sparkled when they first met each other in a Hamilton café in 1962 recently celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary.

Cathie and John Gebbie both say that they knew they were destined to be with one another, from that first meeting at Danny’s Café all those years ago.

But back then they couldn’t have dreamed of celebrating 60 years of wedded bliss.

John and Cathie tied the knot two years after their first fateful meeting, and settled into life as a couple in their marital home in Larkhall before later moving to Blantyre.

They welcomed their son Stephen in 1972, and both are extremely proud of him.

Cathie worked in the Philips factory with her sisters, and also worked in Hamilton Town Hotel as a chambermaid.

While John worked in variety of jobs and places over the years including the steel works, Honeywells, Group 4 Security, and as a Traffic Warden. Most recently he was a cheery face as he ensured the safety of local children every day in his job as a lollipop man at High Blantyre Primary School.

They are grandparents to 19-year-old Abi, who is a university student studying Psychology.

Cathie enjoys reading in her spare time, as well as knitting and doing jigsaw puzzles. She also likes to potter about in the garden when weather permits.

John likes horse racing and is a keen football fan and is keenly following Scotland’s progress at Euros 2024.

The diamond couple enjoy going out for dinner locally and spending time with their family.

John and Cathie were joined on their anniversary by South Lanarkshire Depute Provost Bert Thomson Deputy and Lord Lieutenant for Lanarkshire Alexander Wilkie MBE .

The Depute Provost presented the couple with flowers, a special bottle of whisky and a certificate on behalf of the council, and the Deputy Lord Lieutenant for Lanarkshire presented them with a certificate to mark their magical milestone.
