An amazed couple were thrilled to find hidden treasure when they opened a 50-year-old safe.

The safe – behind their kitchen wall – contained a stash of cash and a treasure hunt.

They came across the lucky loot, when they were renovating their home and knocked through a wall.

The pair from Phoenix, US, remembered that when they moved in, they found a safe code at the back of a medicine cabinet.

After a few attempts, they opened it and found a whopping $51, 080 in $100 notes and a bottle of 1960 bourbon.

The woman posted the movie-like tale on Imgur, of how they came across clues.

She wrote: “We stared in disbelief. Time stood still. I started to reach in the safe and Eddie yelled, ‘Wait! It might be booby trapped!’ I’m still laughing at that one.”

They also found a book called ‘A Guide For the Perplexed by E.F. Schumacher.’, published in 1977.

Inside there was a mysterious black and white photo of a man, with “Alan, I have a book you must read. I’ve underlined a few key passages. Your friend, Vincent.” written on the back.

What seemed to be clues were hidden in some of the pages. For example, on page seven, a passage in the ‘On Philosophical Maps’ chapter read: “One way of looking at the world as a whole is by means of a map, that is to say, some sort of plan or outline that shows where various things are to be found.” Tucked into the same page was a card with Arizona on.

The safe also contained a bingo card with three numbers circled and a photograph of a tree split into three, which has the message “Where one tree becomes three” on it.

The woman posted: “There might be a keen eye out there who recognizes this place and I’d be curious about that three-headed tree.”

The couple have said they don’t know what to do with the money but added: “If Alan is still out there, it was meant for him after all. But we’re keeping the bourbon.”
