Couple leave family home to start exciting new venture at Edinburgh Christmas Markets

A husband and wife have moved to the capital to start their new business venture at Edinburgh Christmas Markets.

Charlton and Sophia Ellis, from Cheshire, are set to welcome customers to their brand new stall, Edinburgh Crumble, on Friday.

As the Christmas Markets prepare to open up, Charlton and Sophia will be selling their fruit crumble to visitors and say they were "shocked" to be granted permission due to the number of applicants.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Charlton said: "We actually came to the markets last year for a look around and we were trying to pick out something a bit different that wasn't there.

"We do catering a lot - we do a lot of big events with different units, but it’s usually quieter in the winter months. We were looking for something to do over Christmas that was going to be good and something we could build on going forward.

"There was no crumble and it just seemed like a huge gap in the market because there was nothing you could eat out of a bowl with a spoon, like you would at home, wrapped up in a blanket on the couch.

"Crumble proved to be the product for us and it's the final countdown now."

The 32-year-old explained they have been through lots of "ups and downs" to get to this point with their new business.

He added: "But that's what it's all about, it's the nature of the business we are in - there is a lot of risks involved. It's a lot like gambling, you put chips in and hope it pays off."

The pair have moved to Edinburgh for the festive period and are not to set to return to their family home until the markets finish on January 5.

Charlton continued: "We had about 30 days to get everything sorted but we knew we could do it. We have put a lot of effort in for this and it's been a lot of stress and hard work to get to this point.

Edinburgh Crumble is set to offer three different crumbles - apple, strawberry and cherry and they all come with custard. Loaded crumbles will also be offered too.
