Couple Shot Dead After Helping Stranded Driver

An 18-year-old man accused of killing a couple who stopped to help him after his car broke down in Wyoming told investigators he opened fire because their daughter laughed at him.

Jason Shane, 52, and Tana Shane, 47, died in Wednesday's shooting in the small town of Pryor.

Their 24-year-old daughter, Jorah Shane, was also shot, but managed to run away.

Jesus Deniz Mendoza admitted to FBI agents he opened fire on the three with a rifle then drove away in their car, say officials.

"Deniz told the interviewing agents that he shot the victims because he was getting tired of waiting around, and because the daughter had laughed at him," court documents state.

He was arrested near Meeteetse, about 120 miles (193km) from the crime scene.

The family had only just returned from a religious revival event in Arizona.

Jorah Shane said her mother drove by a young man parked on the side of the road who told her he had run out of petrol.

"He's only 18, and he looked like an innocent boy," said Jorah Shane's aunt, Ada Shane.

Tana Shane drove to her house to pick up her husband and daughter.

They drove back to the stranded car after stopping to buy some fuel at a store only to find it closed.

The man then pulled a gun, ordered the family out of their car and told them to hand over money.

He told the Shanes to start walking.

Tana Shane told her daughter to flee.

Jorah Shane was shot in the back and had a bullet graze her head as she ran, but managed to escape.

She is recovering in a Billings hospital, though was apparently unaware on Thursday her parents were dead.

Ms Shane had asked investigators to look for her mother, whom she believed to be hiding in a field.
