Plans for a slots and bingo venue in Coventry to open 24/7 have been lodged with the council. Merkur Slots has applied to extend the opening hours of its 'adult gaming centre' in Ball Hill.

The £200k slots arcade opened on Walsgrave Road in a former bank building last year, creating 10 jobs. But limits on when it could open to the public were a condition of the scheme getting planning approval.

Council officers were concerned that comings and goings could disturb locals at quieter times of night, a report from the time said. Concerns over "noise and general disturbance" were also raised by residents, it added.

The company agreed to limit the venue's hours of 8am to midnight. The restrictions were part of a condition of giving the plans approval.

But the business is now applying for retrospective permission to scrap the condition and keep the venue open 24 hours a day. A letter says the bid comes after "correspondence" highlighting a "breach of the panning [sic] condition 5 (opening hours.)"

It said there had been no noise complaints since the centre opened last November. The letter referred to evidence from when the site was open for 24 hours that shows it is "suitable" for the move.

Other venues on the road are open 24 hours a day, it added. The business wants to open later because it is "more in line with [its] business model" the letter said.

Most of its customers after midnight are shift workers looking to relax after busy shifts, it added. Plans have not yet been decided on by the council.
