Six parks and green spaces owned by Coventry City Council have been awarded a Green Flag Award after meeting the high standards set out by Keep Britain Tidy. Overall, 2,227 parks and green spaces, from world-famous city parks to community gardens, have achieved the award.

London Road Cemetery has won a Green Flag Award for the first time, alongside Caludon Castle Park, Allesley Park, Longford Park, Coombe Abbey, and War Memorial Park. The cemetery was designed by architect Joseph Paxton as a burial site and a place of natural beauty for the people of Coventry to enjoy.

The Green Flag Awards are judged by green space experts, including some of the council's own park management team. The Green Flag Award judges volunteer their time to visit applicant sites and assess them against strict criteria, including accessibility, safety, cleanliness, sustainability, and community involvement.

In addition to London Road Cemetery being added to the awards, Coombe Abbey was also awarded the Green Heritage Site Accreditation for the management of historic features. This award, which is supported by Historic England, rewards those organisations who have taken action to conserve the heritage value of their site.

The first awards were given out in 1997 and, many years later, it continues to set the standards expected of our parks and green spaces. It is also seen as a way of encouraging others to achieve high environmental standards, setting a level of excellence in recreational green areas.

Erika Diaz Petersen, Historic England’s Principal National Landscape Adviser, said: "Historic parks, gardens, canals, and other green heritage sites are at the heart of the network of public open spaces that are critical to our health and wellbeing nature, and the environment. The Green Flag Awards recognise the fantastic effort made and high standards achieved by parks professionals, community groups, volunteers and others across the country who look after these important places.

"At Historic England, we are very pleased to support Green Heritage Site Accreditation in England, celebrating the achievements of Green Flag Award winners who care for, share, and celebrate the heritage of their sites."
