A Coventry tower block with 112 flats can be demolished after the council gave plans the go-ahead. Citizen plans to bulldoze William Malcolm House next year as part of its £21 million regeneration scheme in Wyken.

Coventry council approved the bid this week, Tuesday, 26 November. An officer said the authority had no objections, adding the building "does not have any historic or architectural merit that would warrant its protection."

In a statement with plans from October, Citizen said it aims to replace the flats on Attoxhall Road with 60 new homes. It claimed the 1960s block has problems including its "poor condition," and is long past its "design life."

Temporary protection was "recently" installed at the block after "spalling concrete" fell from its facade, the group revealed. It also said it plans to redevelop the land with new social homes and low-rise flats.

But the group's statement highlighted the site's challenging "steep gradient" and said it will "work creatively" with designers. Work to knock down the building is due to start in May next year and end in November.

Citizen's board originally decided to rehouse residents and knock down the flats two years ago, according to an update in early 2024. The group added it was "working closely" with the flats' residents to help them move and said it hoped this would be finished this summer.

Plans for William Malcolm House are part of a wider bid by Citizen to redevelop this area of Wyken, which was first announced in 2019. Another high-rise on Attoxhall Road, 144-flat Vincent Wyles House, was bulldozed earlier this year as part of the scheme.

The building is set to be replaced by 93 "modern and affordable" homes. Citizen's website says it aims to complete the project in four years' time and is drawing up plans to redevelop both sites, which the community will be asked about before it puts forward a planning application.
