Covid cases by borough: Surge may be levelling off in London as latest rates are revealed

There are signs London’s surge in cases is levelling off after weekly cases almost doubled in the lead up to Christmas.

According to the latest figures, the capital-wide seven-day Covid infection rate remained stable between December 20 and December 23, increasingly only slightly from 1,969.4 cases per 100,000 people to 2,024.8.

That translates to about one in fifty Londoners having tested positive in the previous week.

This contrasts with a nearly doubling in the case rate for the seven days up to December 14, when it was 1,072.8, and December 20.

An Evening Standard analysis of the latest borough-by-borough data for the week to December 23 reveals that while Lambeth remained the capital’s worst-worst hit borough, the biggest percentage increases were recorded in north-west London.

In that week, cases increased by 66.8 per cent in Hillingdon to 4,399, while cases in nearby Hounslow increased by 65.1 per cent to 4,364.

Cases remained highest in south London, with the capital’s five worst-hit boroughs all south of the river.

Lambeth’s total of 9,248 cases in that week were closely followed by Wandsworth, (8,858 cases), Southwark, (8,386 cases), Croydon, (8,381 cases), and Lewisham with 7,727 cases.

It comes as Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, which runs the University Hospital Lewisham and Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich, said on Wednesday morning it would ban all adult in-patient visitors without “exceptional circumstances” because of local Covid rates.

A total of 374 Covid patients were reported to have been admitted to hospital in the capital on Boxing Day, a 52 per cent rise in a week.

However, the figure is below the 400 hospital admissions a day ministers have reportedly been told is a key benchmark - and experts have said more people are presenting to hospital with other conditions and also testing positive than in earlier waves.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Wednesday morning that in some intensive care units up to 90 per cent of patients had not had a booster jab.

The government aims to offer all adults a booster dose by the New Year.

Ministers are also facing pressure to change isolation rules amid warnings of the impact that staff absences are having on key services.
