Coronavirus cases are now increasing in 44% of areas in the UK, the latest infection data shows.

The government’s new figures covering the seven days up to 24 March show cases are rising in 170 out of 380 local council areas.

By comparison, Friday's figures, which covered the week up to 21 March, 161 out of 380 local council areas – or 42% of the UK

Comhairle nan Eilean saw the biggest increase of 200% compared to the previous seven days.

Meanwhile, Corby saw the highest seven day rolling average infection rates at 232.6 per 100,000 people.

The fact cases are increasing in more than a third of the UK's local council areas also offers a reminder that the target dates for ending lockdown are not a given – though it will not be infection numbers alone that drive the final decisions.

Boris Johnson has also set a target of 21 June "at the earliest" to lift all restrictions on social contact in England.

During a Downing Street press conference on Tuesday, England's chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty said the vaccine program currently provides a "leaky wall" against another surge in cases as a third wave emerges in Europe.

He also said that those most likely to catch and transmit COVID-19 were in the "younger, unvaccinated group".

It comes as more than 30 million Brits have had their first vaccine and the government eases more lockdown restrictions.
