Covid: Woman self-isolates in plane toilet on flight for five hours after testing positive for virus

A woman who tested positive for Covid locked herself in a plane’s toilet and self-isolated for five hours to protect other passengers.

Marisa Fotieo was travelling from Chicago to Iceland on December 20 when she began to feel symptoms of the virus, including a sore throat.

She took a lateral flow test during the flight and within “what felt like two seconds there were two lines”.

Ms Fotieo, a teacher from Michigan, decided to lock herself in the toilets on the aeroplane for the remainder of the journey to make sure she did not give the virus to other passengers.

“I opted to stay in the bathroom because I did not want to be around others on the flight,” she told CNN.

She captured her experience in a video on TikTok which quickly went viral, with over three million views by December 31.

"Shout out to @Icelandair for my VIP quarantine quarters," she wrote.

She later told NBC News of her “crazy experience” on the flight, saying: “I just took my rapid test and I brought it into the bathroom, and within what felt like two seconds there were two lines.

“There’s 150 people on the flight, and my biggest fear was giving it to them.”

She said flight attendant Ragnhildur "Rocky" Eiríksdóttir had made the journey bearable.

"She made sure I had everything I needed for the next five hours from food to drinks and constantly checked on me assuring me I would be all right," she added.

Shortly after arriving in Reykjavik, she had to quarantine in a hotel – but Eiríksdóttir bought her “flowers and a little Christmas tree with lights so I could hang it”.

"It was so heartfelt, and she’s just an angel,” she added.
