'Crank Up the Bear Conditioner': Portland Zoo Resident Cools Off in Searing Heat

Takoda, an 11-year-old black bear, cooled off in a tub at Oregon Zoo, Portland, in footage posted on June 28 as record temperatures hit the state.

Temperatures hit 115 degrees Fahrenheit at Portland Airport on June 28, the National Weather Service said. This was the highest temperature on record, until 116 degrees was recorded at the same location on June 29.

The previous highest temperature of 107 degrees had last been recorded twice in 1981, the service added.

At least 63 people had died from health issues related to heatwave, Oregon Live reported, citing local authorities.
