A crash closed Smithdown Road after a car went up in flames. Emergency services were called to the area at around 11.55pm on Sunday, January 19.

It followed a report a Ford Fiesta was on fire after being involved in a crash with another vehicle. An eyewitness said they believed the other car was a private hire taxi. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said two fire engines were sent to the scene and when firefighters arrived, everyone was out of the vehicles.

North West Ambulance Service carried out "precautionary checks" on those involved and Merseyside Police confirmed there were no injuries. The fire service added once the fire was extinguished, crews remained on the scene to make the area safe.
