A hapless driver stopped on the M6 by specialist traffic police concerned about the state of his vehicle’s windows got an unexpected reply. Officers from the Central Motorway Police Group stopped the driver of a white Audi A3 close to Junction 13, the turn-off for Stafford South and Central.

They were concerned about the vehicle’s window tints, dark strips which reduce the impact of sunlight. He was told he would not be able to see in night time conditions.

And he seemingly agreed - admitting his ‘dim’ outlook and saying he had crashed his car last week! His car’s windows were found to be letting very little light through – less than ten per cent of what was legal.

Should Huw Edwards have been jailed?

The CPMG team, which patrols the region’s motorways and is made up of officers from West Midlands Police and Staffordshire Police, posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, and said: “Car stopped J13 M6 in Staffordshire Police area due to window tints.

“Driver advised he would struggle to see at night. He replied "Yeah I crashed last week".

“Windscreen & front windows = six per cent. Legal limit being 75 & 70 per cent. Reported Dangerous condition. Operation Lightning. C-Unit Doxey.”
