Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Ranking the Songs of Season Two

Honestly, this season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend hasn’t been everything I’ve wanted to be. Once dear Greg left us in episode four, things started to unwind just a tad. Yet, I hold out hope for the rest of season two next year.

So, to celebrate the things that CEG got right (and really right) this year, here’s my ranking of the songs from the first half of the season from least favourite to Greg Serrano’s repertoire.

18. Triceratops Ballet – Medley

Coming from my least favourite episode of the entire show, it’s no surprise that this song (well it’s not even a song) came last. It feels so much like filler, with absurdity in place of actual jokes. And the worst thing about it is you can’t sing along to it on the bus.

17. Research Me Obsessively

This is an ok song, despite it coming at a time when I felt like the show was losing its way. Brittany Snow delivers as Josh’s new girlfriend and the obituary is laugh out loud funny but it doesn’t have that special oomph the songs often do.

16. Maybe This Dream

Now, this wasn’t bad at all and the lyrics are the classic CEG balance of funny and filthy. Also, Donna Lynne Champlin may be the best singer on the show, I just didn’t love it that much and it didn’t really capture my attention. A great Disney spoof but the music itself wasn’t my type.

15. Friendtopia

A solid Spice Girls spoof that gives Rebecca, Valencia and Heather the chance to have some fun. I just never got into the Spice Girls so it doesn’t really connect with me as it would with others. Great lyrics, though.

14. Stuck In the Bathroom

A song for Heather detailing the events of Paula stuck in the bathroom in great detail. It’s funny but it does feel a little tacked on. Still, Heather gets far too few songs so this was a welcome change.

13. Makey Makeover

“I had a stroke. I had a stroke. I had a stroke. I had a stroke.”

12. Thought Bubbles and Reprise

I like Josh most of the time and his brand of early 2000’s soft rock often gives us some great parodies. As songs go, Thought Bubbles is catchy if it happens to be in a not so good episode.

11. You Go First

Considering that season two put effort into making the big drama about Paula and Rebecca falling out, it was necessary that they could hold your attention with it. This mid-season finale capping song is a classic 80’s ballad about two people who can’t be grown ups and make friends. It’s big and fun but may also prove that the storyline could be over too easily going into the rest of the season.

10. Ping Pong Girl

Again, Josh gets these great soft rock songs and Ping Pong Girl is the best one yet. It feels like classic season one because it’s about Rebecca trying to impress Josh and Rachel Bloom plays the comedy for all its worth.

9. I’m Just a Girl in Love

It took a while to get used to it as the season one theme tune was good, yet it works after a few more listens and that final shot of Rachel Bloom’s face held for a long time is comedy gold.

8. We Should Definitely Not Have Sex Right Now

Catchy, funny and honest, back when I was fully invested in everything and confident the show would be as good as season one. Just a great duet and really shows off the cast’s incredible chemistry.

7. The Math of Love Triangles

The only song in this episode (if you don’t count the ten seconds of Period Sex) and it’s bloody wonderful. Perfectly capturing the essence of Rebecca’s fantastical obsession just as everything’s about to fall apart. Spoofing Marilyn Monroe and with a glitzy design that catches the eye, it’s funny and will worm its way into your head.

6. Trent is Getting Ready Song

Maybe season two had one too many reprises but there were some, particularly this one, that really made you grin. I laughed long and loudly when this came on and it was one of the highlights of the season for me.

5. I Could If I Wanted To

The other reprise that I love of one of my favourite songs from season one. It’s just frickin’ great. “Whoopdefrickindo” Love, love, love.

4. Love Kernels

The first episode of the season and its main song is visually and lyrically brilliant. It defines the first half of the first half of the season and gets that first couple of brilliant episodes off with a bang. More than just a parody, it excels because it’s got a good length and focuses on the music as much as the comedy

3. It Was a Shit Show

Honestly, any of these top three could be number one and you can see the connection between them, right? Whether Greg leaving was a mistake or not (so far, it is) all of his songs were just wonderful. This one really hits an emotional peak and though you know Greg is doing the best thing for all, you can’t help but be sad.

The crescendo at the end where Greg has tears in his eyes and Santino Fontana absolutely frickin’ nails it is jaw-dropping. A gut punch that does what the show does best, balancing raw emotion with humour. Like You Stupid Bitch before it, it hits that peak and doesn’t let you down.

2. Gregs Drinking Song

As I said, any of these could be number one. One of the best things about season two was Greg realising his alcoholism and choosing to do something about it. This Irish inspired jaunty tune is fantastically catchy, funny and has a serious message that makes you realise how good the character is and how much you want him back

1. We Tapped That Ass

We had a Marilyn Monroe spoof so it’s only right to do Singin’ in the Rain too. The top three is all perfect so there’s not much else to say. Josh and Greg are a great pair and they’re tap dancing, fun and filthy homage to classic Hollywood musical numbers is an unbelievable joy.

Sadly this song was the last time the show made me truly happy. I don’t want to be down but I do feel like there’s something missing from the episodes after episode four. However, I hold out hope and I respect a lot of things they’ve tried to do. Paula’s big decisions and Greg leaving a bad relationship for his dreams etc.

In the end, they’ve had many greats songs and it’s still like nothing else on TV. People still need to watch it and support it so go listen to these great songs and then give it a watch. They’re insanely talented people so give it a go and see what you think.
