All Creatures Great and Small star Nicholas Ralph has spoken out about his co-star Callum Woodhouse returning to the series following his exit in 2022. Callum will be returning as Tristan Farnon in the fifth series, which began airing on Thursday, September 19.

Nicholas, who plays James Herriot in the show, said he'd "missed" working with Callum, saying it is "wonderful" to have him back. The actor also revealed Tristan won't be appearing until later in the series.

"Tristan comes back later on in the series. What is it like having Tristan back in Skeldale and Callum back on set? I’ve said it time and time again that the show missed Tristan, and we missed Callum.

"It’s just wonderful to have him back and always a treat to work with Callum. Any scenes we have together were brilliant and a lot of fun," Nicholas said.

He continued: "Tristan, as a character, means so much to so many people within the house, so it was a joy having him back. Seeing him interact with Carmody is a lot of fun because they are both so different. And Callum is just a great laugh—a great guy to have around both on and off set. It was a real treat."

Nicholas is back on screens as vet James, but things have changed for the character. He's been stationed at RAF Abingdon, while his wife Helen (played by Rachel Shenton) has been caring for their newborn son at home.

Nicholas shared his experiences filming the new series of All Creatures Great and Small, confessing that while he's accustomed to working with animals, working with babies was "brilliant".

Before the series premiere, the actor revealed: "Yes, two little babies! They were absolutely brilliant. Like any other actor, they took a minute to get used to everything - after all, they were just three months old. But after a few days, they settled in, and it was amazing to see them smile when they started to recognise you. They were great to work with-just adorable and so smiley once they got comfortable."

Nicholas also offered a sneak peek into the upcoming series for his character James, revealing: "James thinks he's going to come back and be Super Vet, Super Dad, and juggle both roles seamlessly. But the reality is quite different. Having a little baby and trying to be a vet at the same time, with those two worlds colliding, is much more challenging than he anticipated. That makes for a lot of fun in the episodes."
