Cricketer Moeen Ali has received an honorary degree from Coventry University. He received the award at a ceremony held at Coventry Cathedral on Monday.

Moeen was honoured in recognition of his 'outstanding contribution' to cricket, Professor John Latham, Vice-Chancellor of Coventry University, said. His accomplishments include captaining the Three Lions and representing Warwickshire, where he currently skippers the Birmingham Phoenix.

After receiving the award yesterday (November 18), the 37-year-old said he was 'honoured.' He added that it was the 'icing on the cake' of a decade-long career and said the day was 'amazing.'

Moeen, from Birmingham, began his career with Warwickshire before moving to Worcestershire. His performances soon caught the eye of England selectors, and he made his debut for the Three Lions in 2014.

In the years that followed, Moeen represented England in all formats of the game, with the pinnacle of his career being part of the squads that lifted the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019 and the T20 World Cup.

Moeen said: “It has been an amazing day. I have really, really thoroughly enjoyed it with my wife and parents. It is an amazing honour and the icing on the cake of a long career.”

Professor John Latham CBE, Vice-Chancellor of Coventry University, said: “His career has taken him to the very top of the game, including having the honour of leading his country onto the field as captain.”

Mr Latham continued: “His dedication and commitment make him more than a worthy recipient, and it is for those reasons that Coventry University has welcomed Moeen to become an Honorary Doctor of Arts. We could not be prouder for him to join the university family.”
