Croatia: Split suburbs under threat as fire rages in nearby hills

Several houses in suburbs near Split were in danger from the raging fires that quickly spread due to strong winds.

Several homes were evacuated and local roads around the Zrnovnica hills were closed.

Croatian firefighters said the situation was "much better" after more than 100 firefighters and two planes worked to fight back the wildfire overnight in Zrnovnica.

In the Balkans, weeks went by without a drop of rain, and temperatures during July and August were extremely high.
