Pubs at a popular seaside town were forced to shut and the resort put "on lockdown” following reports of violence in the streets.

Several venues in Cromer, Norfolk, said they decided not to open on Saturday evening, with residents describing the town as on "lockdown" on social media.

Cromer Pier posted on social media that the popular theatre was closing “on the advice of police”.

Reports have emerged that huge groups brawled in pubs, with police called to a number of incidents across 24 hours in the quiet seaside resort.

Norman Lamb, Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, tweeted: "Very concerned by what I've read online tonight. Of course happy to support people in Cromer in any way I can."

Norfolk Police said it had increased resources in the town but dismissed reports that someone had been stabbed.

The force said: "We have additional resources in Cromer tonight following reports of low-level disorder earlier today.

"We are aware licensees of local pubs have taken the decision to close this evening and we will have additional officers on patrol to provide reassurance to the local community.

"We are also aware of mentions on social media relating to a stabbing in the town tonight - we can confirm no such incident has been reported to us."

A statement on Cromer Pier's Facebook page said: "On advice from the police the Theatre Bar is closed to the public this evening as are all the other public houses in Cromer.

"Apologies for any inconvenience whilst we support our local police in bringing a difficult situation in the town under control."

The Wellington pub tweeted: "We will not be opening our doors tomorrow! Hopefully normal service will resume on Monday!"

The Red Lion Hotel also wrote on Twitter: "Please be aware the Red Lion is closing early this evening due to local events in the past 24 hours."

Some locals linked the disorder to the arrival of a group of travellers in the area, whom North Norfolk District Council confirmed had camped in a seafront car park.

This has not been confirmed by police.

The town has been hosting its annual carnival week, which attracts about 250,000 visitors to the area.

Supt Malcolm Cooke said: “Local businesses were made aware of a small number of incidents dealt with by officers, but no official police direction was given that businesses should close.

“We acknowledge there have been a number of incidents in Cromer over the weekend, which will understandably cause concern.

“However, I can assure residents these incidents have been dealt with appropriately and are of a nature routinely dealt with in towns such as Cromer on a busy August weekend.”

No arrests were made.
