It's been such a long time that we'd almost forgotten about it, but that Croods sequel is actually, finally happening – although there's a catch.

Yes, The Croods 2 has now been officially confirmed for a 2020 release by Universal Pictures, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The long-planned DreamWorks Animation sequel – and we do mean 'long' – will follow the original prehistoric family as they meet a brand new clan.

Seven whole years after the first film aired in cinemas, The Croods 2 is still expected to feature its original stars, including Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds.

Those last two have come a long way since then, haven't they?

Despite the film disappearing off the radar for a couple of years, we did hear of two new cast announcements back in 2015 in the form of Leslie Mann and Kat Dennings.

Mann is expected to voice the matriarch of a rival family to the original Crood clan, while Dennings will play the new family's daughter, whose instinct to hunt is being suppressed.

Something else expected in 2020 from DreamWorks is the sequel to Trolls, which was confirmed earlier this year with a surprisingly precise release date of April 10.

Equally precisely, The Croods 2 is slated for release on September 18, 2020.
