The Crown star Emma Corrin has claimed Princess Diana was seeking “warmth” from the Royal Family but suggested “she found the exact opposite” after marrying Prince Charles.

The actor, who played Princess Diana in the fourth series of the multi-award-winning Netflix Drama, appears in the Pop & Fall Fashion Issue of W Magazine. She was shot by noted photograph Tim Walker in a series of unusual and out-there outfits and settings.

Corrin, who prefers to be referred to with the pronoun “they,” discussed Princess Diana in the magazine.

The star said the late royal was a “warm person who gravitated towards people” but said it was not reciprocated by the Royal Family.

Corrin told W: “There became a clear connection from Diana’s unstable childhood to her looking for something welcoming… We knew she was a very warm person who gravitated towards people. She was looking to be embraced in something very warm and very familiar, and she didn’t find that at all; she found the exact opposite with the royal family.”

The fourth season of the hit show followed the 1981 marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles. Corrin won a Golden Globe for her portrayal and was nominated for an Emmy.

Elizabeth Debicki will play Diana in the fifth series of The Crown. Meanwhile, the role of Charles - played by Josh O’Connor - will now pass to Dominic West.

With the success of the show came an increased profile, Corrin said they felt a “responsibility” to use their platform authentically post The Crown.

“It’s hard when you have a platform, but I want to make everything feel very authentic,” she said. “I think we’ve become much more aware of our positions in our communities and the circles in which we operate.”

The star, 25, also discussed their new role in the play Anna X. It is a play inspired by the story of the fake German heiress Anna Delvey, the Russia-born grifter who scammed New York high society before being arrested in 2017.

They said about the role: “It’s a bit mad… I knew we had a good show and a gem of a script, but I thought there was going to be a massive generational divide.”

Corrin said her brother was a particular fan of the show. They said: “It was so much fun, because there are so many lines about how dysfunctional and hilarious dating apps are. He’s going to hate me for saying this, but he has the most amazing dating app stories. When we were taking our bows, I winked at him, and he was just screaming and applauding.”
