Game of Thrones star Charles Dance, who looks like he was biologically-engineered specifically to be in a programme about the royals, has been cast in The Crown season 3.

It's yet to be confirmed who the actor will be playing, but Digital Spy understands he'll be stepping into the shoes of Prince Charles' favourite great-uncle Lord Louis Mountbatten.

Prince Charles will be played by The Durrells star Josh O'Connor, who has also been seen filming with Dance.

We've also been given a first look at Olivia Colman on set as Queen Elizabeth II, along with Helena Bonham Carter in the role of Princess Margaret.

Season three also welcomes Tobias Menzies and Ben Daniels, who'll be playing Prince Philip and Anthony Armstrong respectively.

According to creator Peter Morgan, the third season will take place between the years 1964 and 1976.

This means it will potentially cover the death of Winston Churchill, Harold Wilson's two terms as prime minister, the rise of Margaret Thatcher, Princess Margaret's affair with British baronet and landscape gardener Roddy Llewellyn, and the National Union of Mineworkers strike of 1972.

The Crown season three arrives on Netflix in 2019. Seasons one and two are streaming now.
