Netflix has confirmed a release window for the final season of The Crown.

According to The Wrap, Netflix's Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria has stated that the sixth season of the royal drama will premiere sometime in Autumn 2023.

Season six will focus on several key events in the Monarchy's history across the late '90s and early 2000s. It will also see Imelda Staunton (Queen Elizabeth II), Jonathan Pryce (Prince Philip), Dominic West (Prince Charles) and Elizabeth Debicki (Princess Diana) reprise their roles.

Most notably, the show will depict the death of Princess Diana, something West revealed was a "heavy responsibility" for the cast.

"It's a heavy, heavy, heavy season, and a heavy responsibility to get it right, and something I think we all take pretty seriously," he told Entertainment Weekly earlier this year.

The Crown season six will also feature the early days of Prince William and Kate Middleton's relationship. Actors Ed McVey and Meg Bellamy have been spotted on set at St Andrews, where the couple first met.

Likewise, an official description for the upcoming season reveals that we'll see William's years at university.

McVey will take over the role from Rufus Kampa, who will be portraying the Prince as a young teenager.

Meanwhile, executive producer Suzanne Mackie previously explained the decision to end the show after six seasons. She revealed that showrunner Peter Morgan believed there needed to be at least a decade between the real-life events and their retellings on screen.

"Peter has said it very articulately, that he simply can't write something unless there has been time to gain a proper perspective," she said.

"I think he's always felt 10 years is the minimum amount of time that he can see something in a historical context, to allow him to really understand it."

The Crown season 6 will premiere in autumn 2023, seasons 1-5 are streaming on Netflix. Seasons 1-4 are also available on DVD and Blu-ray.
