The Crown star Dominic West has defended the timing of season 5 following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other press, Dominic West said the timing of the release was "poignant" following a period of mourning.

"I think it makes it rather poignant. I think we all had a period of mourning. Shooting in season 6 was suspended during the period of mourning."

West, who plays then-Prince Charles in the upcoming season, which is set to premiere tomorrow (November 9), said that interest in the series has grown following the death of the Queen.

"What's interesting is how much there's been an uptake of watching previous seasons of The Crown since the funeral," West revealed. "And obviously it's something that people are going to for information, because they want to learn more about the royals, probably."

Attributing the uptake in interest to a desire to learn more about the late Queen and as a source of comfort following her death, West said that previous seasons depicted the Queen's life in ways that viewers have not previously seen.

"But also probably for comfort, and to remember, perhaps, the Queen's life in a way that I don't think has ever been depicted as well as it was in seasons 1 and 2, certainly – and 3 and 4," West said. "So I think it’s rather poignant."

Discussing the date of its release, West explained how the series has always premiered this time of year, adding: "Obviously The Crown always opens in November, and it doesn't seem too soon for me. In fact, I think that the advertising is greater for it, as a result."

West took over the role of Prince Charles for season five from Josh O'Connor, and will play the role until the series' sixth and final season.

The Crown season 5 will premiere on November 9, 2022, while seasons 1-4 are now streaming on Netflix. Seasons 1-3 are also available on DVD and Blu-ray.
