A 'cruel' man who launched his dog at a parked car’s windscreen has been banned from owning animals for a decade. Violent Jamie Cook was also seen kicking and punching the pet, which has since been rehomed.

The 27-year-old attacked the dog in New Road on July 31, and was reported to police by a concerned member of the public. Later that day, another witness saw him pick up the dog and throw it onto the windscreen of a car in Long Acre.

Police identified Cook from CCTV footage and he was arrested, however whilst he was in custody, he spat on an officer. Cook, of Hurcott Road, Kidderminster, pleaded guilty to two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal, one count of assault emergency worker and one count of criminal damage at Kidderminster Magistrates' Court.

He was given a 16-week custodial sentence during a hearing on Monday, November 18. Half will be served on licence.

Cook was also banned from owning an animal for 10 years and ordered to pay compensation of £95 for the damage to the car. The court was told that the dog was not seriously injured despite its treatment and was rehomed after the ordeal.

Investigating officer PC Callum Archer said: “This was a particularly cruel attack on what was the owner’s own dog, so we are pleased to get a conviction and see him banned from owning animals as well as serving jail time. Thank you to those members of the public who reported his violent actions to us and helped our investigation secure this sentence.

“Fortunately, the dog came through the ordeal physically unscathed and has now been rehomed.”
