Crumlin lorry driver admits to causing death of pedestrian knocked down in Glengormley
A lorry driver today (Monday) admitted causing the death of a 61-year old pedestrian who was knocked down on the outskirts of Belfast.
Mother-of-three Anne Brown died from the injuries she sustained after being struck by a lorry in Glengormley in February 2022.
Patrick Campbell, from Lurgan Road in Crumlin, was due to stand trial at Belfast Crown Court after initially denying a charge of causing Mrs Brown’s death by driving dangerously.
Before the jury was sworn, Campbell’s barrister Charles MacCreanor KC asked that his client be re-arraigned on the single count.
After confirming his identity to a court clerk, Campbell, 49, was then charged that on February 4, 2022 he caused Anne Brown’s death by driving dangerously on the Antrim Road in Glengormley.
When asked how he pleaded, Campbell replied “guilty, Your Honour”.
Following this, Mr MacCreanor told Judge Sandra Crawford he was seeking a pre-sentence report ahead of sentencing. The Judge was also addressed by Crown barrister Kate McKay who said victim statements will be obtained from Mrs Brown’s husband and three children who have been “heavily impacted” by her death.
Judge Crawford re-listed the case for mention on October 7 when it is anticipated that a date for the plea will be set. Campbell - who kept his head bowed throughout today’s hearing - was released on continuing bail.
