Crystal Palace vs Brighton - LIVE!

Crystal Palace were cruelly denied all three points in Patrick Vieira’s first derby match in charge at Selhurst Park.

The Eagles led in south London on Monday night courtesy of Wilfried Zaha’s emphatic late first-half penalty awarded after a barge on the impressive Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher by Leandro Trossard.

Jordan Ayew missed a superb opportunity to put the game beyond Brighton in the final 15 minutes, firing into the side netting after being set up perfectly by substitute Christian Benteke.

It was a miss that would prove very costly indeed in the depths of stoppage time.

With 95 minutes on the clock, a poor goal kick from Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita was lofted back forward by Brighton’s Joel Veltman, with ex-Brentford striker Neal Maupay then beating the Spaniard with a brilliant lob to spark pandemonium in the away end.

Tempers flared between both sets of players after the final whistle as emotions ran high following the last-gasp goal.

Vieira learned much about the Palace-Brighton rivalry by watching the ‘When Eagles Dare’ Amazon documentary, while he says first-team coach Shaun Derry has played an important role in the build-up to tonight’s clash.

"I know the trouble that our football club went through and I understand how both fans are about this game,” the Frenchman said.

"Arriving to this football club, I was looking at the documentary because it was important for me to fully understand what this football club was about. This documentary made me really understand the club and the people around me."

He added: “Shaun has been talking with players individually.

"This is why it is really important he is part of the coaching staff, for the love and passion he has for this football club, also for the experience that he had as a player in this club.

"He is a really good help for myself to send a couple of messages to the players because nobody knows this club or those kind of games better than Shaun."

“I've become more aware since I've been in the job," he said.

“They are putting themselves there to be shot at or to fail, because just because you’ve been a top player doesn’t mean you’ll be a top coach,” said the Brighton boss.

“But the fact that they are on that path is commendable and admirable. They will need the right support and opportunities. But for the game I think it’s important to have those guys involved as long as we can.

“It shows their intelligence, it shows their humility. Both of those guys are some of the best players to play in the modern era.

“You have good days and bad days. You have failures. It’s how you deal with them. Keep going. Keep improving. But Patrick has shown those characteristics all his career.
