Crystal Palace vs Brighton - LIVE!

Crystal Palace were cruelly denied all three points in Patrick Vieira’s first derby match in charge at Selhurst Park.

The Eagles led in south London on Monday night courtesy of Wilfried Zaha’s emphatic late first-half penalty awarded after a barge on the impressive Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher by Leandro Trossard.

Jordan Ayew missed a superb opportunity to put the game beyond Brighton in the final 15 minutes, firing into the side netting after being set up perfectly by substitute Christian Benteke.

It was a miss that would prove very costly indeed in the depths of stoppage time.

With 95 minutes on the clock, a poor goal kick from Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita was lofted back forward by Brighton’s Joel Veltman, with ex-Brentford striker Neal Maupay then beating the Spaniard with a brilliant lob to spark pandemonium in the away end.

Tempers flared between both sets of players after the final whistle as emotions ran high following the last-gasp goal.

Graham Potter reaction

23:18 , George Flood

“There’s a resilience, a belief and there’s a character. There always has been but we needed a bit of luck.

“I didn’t think it was a one-sided affair, we deserved a point more than Palace deserved a point last time at our place, but that’s life, that’s football.

“We’ve got 13 points from six games, that’s a good start but we can still improve a lot I think and that’s what we’ll focus on.”

Graham Potter reaction

22:43 , George Flood

"It does (feel like a win), it's a fantastic feeling and great for our supporters - to celebrate in front of those guys was amazing.

"It was a tight game, there was not much in it to be fair. We pushed and pushed in the second half, there was a great spirit to keep going and obviously it was a fantastic finish to get the equaliser.

"Even at half time, with one minute to go there's the penalty but there weren't too many chances I don't think, but we kept going and we're happy with the point, we'll take it.”

Patrick Vieira reaction

22:42 , George Flood

"We are all disappointed. The players in the dressing room are as much disappointed as I am and the fans as well. We had that win in our hands and with the last kick of the game to concede a goal like that is difficult to accept.

"But we have to look at the game and how difficult we made it for them. They are a really good side playing with a lot of confidence and working together for three or four years and we gave them a really good game.

"At the end of course we are disappointed because we should have taken these three points."

Maupay on post-match dispute

22:25 , George Flood

Maupay was also asked about that flashpoint after the final whistle...

“I think football is nothing without fans, and without some involvement between players. It’s a derby. Everyone wanted to win. The atmosphere was really, really good,” he said.

“I scored, and I saw (Wilfried) Zaha and I smiled at him because I saw him celebrating his penalty in the first half and he gave some to our fans.

“I won’t say what he said but you know how it is sometimes between players, you give a bit of banter. That was a good time for us because we scored in the last minute so it was a good time to give him something.”

Maupay reaction

22:23 , George Flood

Brighton’s goalscorer told Sky Sports: “It’s been a tough game, I thought Palace played well, we weren’t so good today, but I think the resilience of the team was spot on and in the end we scored so we’re definitely happy with the point tonight.

“Before the goalkeeper kicked it, I asked the referee how long was left and he said there was a minute. I thought, ‘Okay, we might have one more chance, or we might not’.

“The ball went behind the defender, I just saw the ball coming and I believed I could get it and I did, I scored, so I’m very, very happy tonight.”

Full-time

21:57 , George Flood

Crystal Palace 1-1 Brighton

Maupay’s last-gasp goal cancels out Zaha’s penalty!

Tensions are flaring between both sets of players after the full-time whistle.

Emotions running high.

GOAL! Crystal Palace 1-1 Brighton | Neal Maupay 95'

21:55 , George Flood

95 mins: Carnage in the away end as Maupay brilliantly lobs Guaita, whose poor goal kick had been sent straight back forward by Veltman.

Brighton have snatched a point at the death as Potter leaps for joy on the touchline.

Gutting for Palace. A shroud of blue smoke engulfs the pitch.

21:53 , George Flood

93 mins: A very brave punch from Guaita, who stays down clutching his shoulder.

He looks okay to continue, however. Palace are almost there!

21:49 , George Flood

90 mins: That’s a real chance for Brighton as the clock hits 90 minutes, with Duffy getting above Benteke to connect with Gross’ free-kick from the left, but he doesn’t get enough purchase on the header and Guaita gathers.

Five minutes of added time signalled. Is there any late drama to come?

21:48 , George Flood

87 mins: The Palace fans warmly applaud Zaha after he gets back to battle with Veltman and earn Palace a pressure-relieving goal kick.

21:45 , George Flood

85 mins: It’s not a want of trying from Brighton, but they just cannot get anything going here in the closing stages - much to the delight of the home fans.

Ayew - who should have put this game out of reach - is replaced by Jeff Schlupp, who is now fit again after a hamstring issue.

21:43 , George Flood

83 mins: Gallagher takes a heavy touch and then dives in wildly on Cucurella. Perhaps a spot of revenge!

He’s also booked.

21:40 , George Flood

80 mins: Zaha and Trossard have been tussling all night and the latter now shoves over his Palace counterpart, receiving a booking for his troubles.

Jack Rosser at Selhurst Park

21:37 , George Flood

That’s a huge let-off for Brighton.

Benteke waited until the perfect moment to release Ayew, who simply has to do better with the finish.

21:37 , George Flood

77 mins: A HUGE chance for Palace to put this game to bed is wasted.

Cucurella gives the ball away to Gallagher and then chops down the Chelsea loanee, retrospectively receiving a yellow card.

But play continues and Benteke plays in Ayew, who has to score but hits the side netting.

Will that miss come back to haunt Palace?

21:35 , George Flood

76 mins: Welbeck has picked up a knock and heads off, replaced by Republic of Ireland forward Connolly.

21:34 , George Flood

75 mins: A huge defensive header from Benteke and the tireless Gallagher is once again on hand to sweep up on the edge of the box.

Aaron Connolly will be Brighton’s final substitution.

21:33 , George Flood

73 mins: Coming up on the last 15 minutes in this derby and Palace look very comfortable at the moment.

But Brighton have another corner...

21:31 , George Flood

70 mins: Vieira sends on Benteke and Cheikhou Kouyate in place of Edouard and Milivojevic.

Reversing the two changes he made for this game.

21:30 , George Flood

69 mins: Edouard is busy in the box trying to create another Palace opening, but he’s well handled near the byline.

That was his last contribution of the evening. Christian Benteke is being readied on the touchline.

21:26 , George Flood

65 mins: Alzate limps off to be replaced by Moder, whose first introduction is to deliver a teasing low cross from the right wing that Guehi does well to turn behind.

Palace clear the subsequent corner with minimal fuss.

21:23 , George Flood

62 mins: Guehi gambles by leaving a fierce low cross alone and thankfully for the ex-Chelsea man there are no Brighton attackers to meet it.

Alzate appeared to hurt his ankle tussling with Ayew a few moments ago and is down in a lot of pain.

The substitute may well need to be substituted here. Brighton were already preparing to send on Poland international midfielder Jakub Moder.

21:21 , George Flood

21:21 , George Flood

61 mins: Zaha earns Palace another corner that Alzate meets at the front post.

Sanchez then flies across to make a theatrical one-handed punch as Marc Guehi goes for the overhead kick.

21:18 , George Flood

57 mins: This derby is bubbling away nicely as we approach the hour mark.

Palace do well to earn another corner, with Sanchez unhappy with Edouard’s physicality inside the six-yard box.

A ball is then hung up towards Lallana at the other end, but Guaita can claim.

21:14 , George Flood

54 mins: Alzate is fortunate to get away with a handball just outside the Brighton box, with Palace’s high press causing plenty of issues.

But Brighton burst into life and play some neat football in and around the Palace area, with a free-kick from a useful position headed clear.

21:12 , George Flood

52 mins: Zaha is sent in behind Veltman and denied by a great close-range stop from Sanchez.

The offside flag then goes up. It wouldn’t have counted anyway.

21:11 , George Flood

50 mins: Guaita forced into action early in this second half as Dunk rises above everyone to connect with a free-kick and his header is pushed over the top.

The Seagulls keep up their sudden momentum and Gallagher makes two solid blocks after good work from Trossard. Lallana denied.

How good is Gallagher, by the way? He’s such a huge attacking threat and buzzes everywhere out of possession, closing people down all over the place and making key blocks.

21:08 , George Flood

47 mins: Palace looking in the mood at the start of this second half, with Gallagher a particular menace.

Brighton have gone to a back four by the way.

21:05 , George Flood

45 mins: Back underway at Selhurst.

A change from Brighton, with Burn replaced by Steven Alzate.

A tweak to the system from Potter to try and get back into this.

20:58 , George Flood

Jack Rosser at Selhurst Park

20:55 , George Flood

The perfect end to the half for Palace. It was starting to look like they wouldn’t be able to take advantage of their dominance in this first half but Gallagher, who has been looking to make things happen throughout, makes the run that so few have been willing to make so far and gets his reward.

Fine penalty from Zaha. Selhurst shaking as they head down the tunnel.

Half-time

20:49 , George Flood

Crystal Palace 1-0 Brighton

Zaha’s stoppage-time penalty is the difference at the break.

GOAL! Crystal Palace 1-0 Brighton | Wilfried Zaha 47'

20:48 , George Flood

47 mins: As cool as you like from Zaha, who sends Sanchez the wrong way from the spot.

He loves a goal against Brighton - his eighth in this derby fixture and fifth against them at home.

Palace lead on the stroke of half-time and Selhurst erupts.

Brighton will not be happy with that wild-looking challenge from Ward in the build-up, even if he did get the ball.

Penalty to Crystal Palace

20:47 , George Flood

46 mins: Into one minute of added time and Palace have a penalty!

The lively Gallagher cuts into the box and is pushed off balance by Cucurella before being barged over by Trossard.

The Belgian pleads his innocence, but that won’t be overturned.

20:45 , George Flood

45 mins: There’s more of that snappy football on the edge of the box from Palace as Gallagher and Edouard combine, with the Frenchman felled by Trossard but not getting a free-kick.

Ward then flies in on Welbeck, but looked to get the ball.

20:44 , George Flood

43 mins: Mitchell, Gallagher and Zaha combine down the Palace left, with the latter’s stood-up cross headed away from intented target Ayew by Cucurella.

The Eagles keep the pressure on, but just can’t find a way through at present, for all their patient build-up.

20:41 , George Flood

40 mins: Gallagher and Edouard are threatening in behind as half-time looms, but that final ball sorely lacking for Palace.

20:38 , George Flood

37 mins: Brighton earn a corner after good link-up play between Cucurella and Trossard down that left flank, with a sliding Ward blocking the Spaniard’s cross (not with his hand, as some of the visitors claimed).

Edouard heads clear the first delivery and Lallana is put under pressure by Gallagher as he fires the loose ball high into the stand.

20:36 , George Flood

35 mins: The game is opening up now as Palace attack and Zaha’s low shot is comfortably saved by Sanchez.

20:34 , George Flood

33 mins: Route one from Brighton, with Palace caught out by a long ball forward from Sanchez.

Welbeck gets after it, brushing aside Ward but not getting enough power on his lofted effort from close range as Vicente Guaita comes out to save.

Welbeck wants a penalty, feeling his heel was clipped by Ward.

Nothing given by referee Andre Marriner. The VAR concurs.

20:32 , George Flood

31 mins: This is better from Brighton, with Lallana the architect and Maupay doing well to keep their attack alive.

But Veltman’s cross from the right flank is hopeless and sails out of play.

20:31 , George Flood

29 mins: First chance for Brighton just before the half-hour mark as Leandro Trossard sends an effort into the side netting after a cutback from Gross, who showed good perseverance against Mitchell.

20:29 , George Flood

27 mins: McArthur drives past Adam Lallana, who drags down his midfield counterpart and duly receives the first yellow card of this derby contest.

20:27 , George Flood

25 mins: Milivojevic tries to catch out Sanchez with a quick sneaky effort at the front post, but he strikes it well wide.

Opportunity missed.

A fifth attempt so far to Brighton’s zero, but only one on target so far.

Just one touch in the opposition box for Brighton to this point, meanwhile.

Potter will demand better.

20:26 , George Flood

23 mins: Brighton have been really sloppy at times so far tonight, particularly in defence.

After Duffy cuts out an intended ball in behind for Edouard, Gallagher is quick to close down Sanchez, whose poor kick Cucurella inexplicably tries to chest back.

Ayew seizes on the loose ball and is then sandwiched by Cucurella and Burn. Free-kick Palace in a dangerous position.

Jack Rosser at Selhurst Park

20:21 , George Flood

Palace seeing far more of the ball but yet to really stretch Brighton.

If they’re going to do so, they need to play the sort of football that brought about that shot from Edouard.

Quick, snappy passing around the edge of the box.

20:20 , George Flood

19 mins: Tidy link-up play from Vieira’s men as Ayew, Zaha and Andersen combine to tee up Edouard, who sends a tricky low shot goal-bound but it’s gathered easily by Sanchez.

The first sight of goal tonight for Palace’s £14m man on his full debut.

20:17 , George Flood

16 mins: Milivojevic’s drive from distance is blocked by Marc Cucurella and Burn makes a key intervention to dispossess Gallagher as Palace continue to probe patiently for a decent opening.

20:14 , George Flood

13 mins: Plenty of possession for Palace as Zaha twists and turns and tries to create space for a low cross which is easily dealt with.

Jack Rosser at Selhurst Park

20:12 , George Flood

Palace have made the better start but seem to be trying a few long balls and crosses against a towering Brighton defence, which feels a strange approach for a rather small and quick front line.

20:12 , George Flood

11 mins: Aggressive Palace continue to force errors from Brighton just outside the visitors’ penalty area.

But they will want to start converting these turnovers into decent chances, with a wild cross from Ward heading out of play for a throw-in on the far side.

20:09 , George Flood

8 mins: Palace sustain their early pressure and the tricky Gallagher cuts inside before unleashing an effort that is headed behind by the diving Lewis Dunk.

The corner goes short and Zaha tries to catch out Robert Sanchez, but the Brighton goalkeeper is equal to the test.

20:08 , George Flood

6 mins: This is purposeful stuff from Palace, they are aggressive and pressing hard, forcing mistakes.

Brighton are caught in possession after Tyrick Mitchell’s cross is too high for Edouard and Jordan Ayew sees a shot deflected behind for another corner.

20:05 , George Flood

4 mins: Joachim Andersen endears himself to the Palace fans by pulling and throwing Neal Maupay to the floor.

But that was a worry for Palace as Brighton poured forward on the counter, with Danny Welbeck cutting inside Joel Ward all too easily.

It’s a promising position for the visitors, but they are stopped in their tracks by a handball call against Maupay.

20:03 , George Flood

2 mins: Positive early work from Palace, with Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher forcing an initial corner that is emphatically headed clear by Shane Duffy.

Jack Rosser at Selhurst Park

20:01 , George Flood

A magnificent atmosphere here at Selhurst for the first meeting between these two in front of fans for some time.

The new faces at Palace quickly learning how much this means.

So Burn’s inclusion will see him slot into Brighton’s three-man defence, with Joel Veltman reverting to wing-back and March dropping to the bench.

Bissouma’s absence is a big, big blow, however. Undoubtedly the Seagulls’ best player.

No Bissouma for Brighton

19:20 , George Flood

The headline team news from a Brighton perspective is the absence of key midfielder Yves Bissouma, with Pascal Gross taking his place after recovering from Covid-19.

There is one other change from the impressive 2-1 win over Leicester, with Dan Burn replacing Solly March.

Vieira learned much about the Palace-Brighton rivalry by watching the ‘When Eagles Dare’ Amazon documentary, while he says first-team coach Shaun Derry has played an important role in the build-up to tonight’s clash.

"I know the trouble that our football club went through and I understand how both fans are about this game,” the Frenchman said.

"Arriving to this football club, I was looking at the documentary because it was important for me to fully understand what this football club was about. This documentary made me really understand the club and the people around me."

He added: “Shaun has been talking with players individually.

"This is why it is really important he is part of the coaching staff, for the love and passion he has for this football club, also for the experience that he had as a player in this club.

"He is a really good help for myself to send a couple of messages to the players because nobody knows this club or those kind of games better than Shaun."

Vieira: Potter is an example for me to follow

18:44 , George Flood

Going back to the mutual respect on show between the respective managers, Vieira has even held up Potter as an example he would like to follow at Selhurst Park.

"What is really positive is that Graham took over a club with a manager who was successful but playing in a different way,” he said.

"He managed to keep that success with his philosophy in place and how he wants to play the game. I think this is a good example for me of what I want to do in this football club.

"I arrived, Roy [Hodgson] has been really successful in the last couple of years and it's not about me changing everything because they've been doing some really good stuff in this football club.

"It's about me coming with different ideas but keeping the foundation that Roy has been building."

18:39 , George Flood

Despite Brighton’s obvious progress under his leadership, Graham Potter has yet to mastermind a win against Palace, presiding over two draws and two defeats.

And those contests have left him in little doubt as to the significance of an unusual derby.

“I've become more aware since I've been in the job," he said.

"It's a strange one, because in the first year there were crowds, people were around more, there was more interaction with people from outside and you get more stuff: 'Make sure we beat them', that type of talk.

"Because we've been in bubbles since then, you have less of that. It's not quite the same.

 (PA)

"The first game at Selhurst Park, the atmosphere was great. You feel it at the ground and that was probably the moment where you think 'OK, this is a nice, tasty match'. And it's exciting.

"For both sets of supporters it's just wonderful to be there, to experience the game.

"We want a good game in a good atmosphere and try to be as positive as we can. But I understand the feeling, the passion.

"The two games last year, we were scratching our heads a little bit as to why we only picked up one point, because we felt we played really well at Selhurst Park and then at the Amex.

"That's still there in the mind. We just need to not worry about what's happened and try to enjoy it. We'll do our best."

Potter: Vieira will be a ‘fantastic’ manager

18:21 , George Flood

While the jury may still be out for many people on Vieira as a head coach, Potter had some kind words for his opposite number, Steven Gerrard and other top players who risk their legacies by going on to tackle management.

“They are putting themselves there to be shot at or to fail, because just because you’ve been a top player doesn’t mean you’ll be a top coach,” said the Brighton boss.

“But the fact that they are on that path is commendable and admirable. They will need the right support and opportunities. But for the game I think it’s important to have those guys involved as long as we can.

“It shows their intelligence, it shows their humility. Both of those guys are some of the best players to play in the modern era.

(POOL/AFP via Getty Images)

“You have good days and bad days. You have failures. It’s how you deal with them. Keep going. Keep improving. But Patrick has shown those characteristics all his career.

“He can apply them to management, I’m sure. He’s an intelligent guy. I’ve no doubt he’s going to be a fantastic coach.”

Zaha challenged to be more consistent

18:10 , George Flood

In the build-up to this rivalry clash, Vieira also urged Zaha to become more consistent with his performances.

“This is one of the areas that Wilfried needs to improve," said the Arsenal legend.

"As a top player, he needs to be consistent in his performance.

“Against Liverpool, he was good. He had the time to create something for the team.

“I was really happy with the last couple of games he played, and I will want him to maintain that level because he is an important player for us.”

Vieira wants Zaha to lead by example

18:04 , George Flood

Patrick Vieira wants to see Crystal Palace talisman Wilfried Zaha channel his emotions in a positive manner tonight and lead by example.

“I don’t want him to change – I want him to play with the same kind of passion,” said Vieira. “He is a winner, and I want that kind of winning mentality to be translated to the rest of the team.

“That is his personality, and I like to see him like that on the field.

“Wilfried playing those kind of games at home or away, he knows the intensity, the atmosphere of the stadium – he knows what to expect.

“Being in the dressing room, he will talk to the players who never had the chance to play those games.”

Brighton team news

As for Brighton, wing-back Tariq Lamptey (hamstring) played 45 minutes against Swansea in the Carabao Cup last week in his first action since December, but seems likely to be among the substitutes tonight.

Graham Potter is hoping midfielders Alexis Mac Allister (back) and Yves Bissouma (knee) will be fit, but Enock Mwepu (groin) is likely to miss out.

Pascal Gross is back after suffering from Covid-19, but defender Adam Webster won’t return from a thigh problem until after the international break.
