Cub leader says sorry after caught drink-driving

Cub leader David Potts has been banned from driving for 15 months after he was caught drink-driving the morning after drinking alcohol. The 49-year-old was stopped by police after they believed he was speeding on Potteries Way, Hanley, at 10am on September 8.

Prosecutor Suzanne Swindail told North Staffordshire Justice Centre Potts was driving a grey Toyota. She said: "Police witnessed him taking corners at what they believed to be excessive speed. The car was followed and came to a stop near the Potteries Shopping Centre on Town Road.

"The defendant was the sole occupant. He provided a positive roadside sample and was arrested. He was taken to custody where he provided an evidential sample of 56 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, against the legal limit of 35."

Potts, of Heron Close, Packmoor, pleaded guilty to drink-driving.

Representing himself, Potts, an engineer on the railways who checks trains are built and maintained properly, said: "I apologise. I was late for a meeting. I run a cub section. We had a meeting on Sunday morning.

"The alcohol was still in my system from the evening before. I co-operated throughout with the police."

Potts, who has no previous convictions, lives with his wife and two adopted children. He added his employers are disappointed but have been sympathetic.

Magistrates fined Potts £761 and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £304 surcharge. His ban will be reduced by 15 weeks if he completes a drink-drivers' rehabilitation course.
