Cumbre Vieja Volcano's Lava Flow Threatens Residential Areas of La Palma

More than 700 additional residents were ordered to evacuate parts of the Spanish island of La Palma on Tuesday, October 12, as lava flow from the Cumbre Vieja volcano was expected to reach the municipality of Los Llanos de Aridane, El Pais reported.

The new evacuations would bring the total number of people displaced by the eruption to about 6,800.

This footage filmed by Ruben Lopez shows lava erupting on Tuesday morning. “This morning we were able to take these images on the north slope of the volcano (exclusion zone) with the river of lava flowing down the slope and the degassing sources in the background,” Lopez wrote in Spanish.

Nearly 170 hectares (about 420 acres) of agricultural land had been affected by lava as of Tuesday, according to El Pais. Credit: Ruben Lopez e Instituto Geografico Nacional via Storyful
