Staff at an Indian restaurant were apparently left red-faced after sharing their excitement at having hosted singer Paul Weller - only to find out it wasn't him.

The Bilash Restaurant in Wolverhampton opened early to host the star ahead of a gig in the city, sharing a picture on Facebook of the person they thought was Weller with the chef.

In the post, they wrote: "The legend Paul Weller here dining tonight just before performing at the halls. Such an amazing gentleman.

"Thank you #paulweller for choosing us for your dining experience."

According to The Sun, The Bilash’s manager said the man said he was Paul Weller, adding: “We were so impressed we even put his playlist on and everyone ate their curry listening to Wild Wood and his best tracks."

He said people had flocked to the restaurant after word spread that a famous face was apparently there, and claimed the man even signed autographs.

He added: "A lot of people were tricked that night."

The alleged mix-up has had plenty of attention on social media, with many people pointing out the man wasn't Paul Weller, while others suggested it might have been a deliberate stunt to get the restaurant noticed.

Among over 100 comments on the restaurant's post on Facebook, some people asked why it hadn't removed the post if the owners now knew it wasn't Weller.

Others suggested that the situation may have been a marketing ploy by the Bilash. One person wrote: "How to get loads of free advertising on national radio stations, TV and social media! Well done!"

Another person said: "Khans Restaurant - kudos on your marketing idea, look how many people are talking about it."
