The 80th anniversary of Normandy Day will be extra special in Nuneaton. On Saturday, June 8, not only will the town be marking the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings on June 6 1944 - it will also see a road renamed in honour of one of its own heroes.

Clinic Drive will be renamed Fusilier Louis Carter Drive. Fusilier Carter, who was aged just 18 when he lost his life in the heat of the Helmand Province in 2009, already has the play area in Riversley Park named in his honour, and now the road nearby will bear his name, too.

There will be a special ceremony to mark the moment, something that Louis' mum, Denise, has long campaigned for. It will start from the Town Hall steps at 2pm on Saturday, June 8.

Murray Richards, a freeman of Nuneaton and Bedworth and its proud parade marshal, said the whole community is invited along to watch the unveiling. Town Crier, Paul Gough, will make the proclamation on the Town Hall steps.

Then the parade will form up near the gate to the cemetery at Our Lady of the Angels Church. Mrs Carter will lay a wreath on the grave of her son, who is buried at the church.

At 2.30pm, the parade steps off and at 2.35pm, the parade will then halt on Clinic Drive. The service will then be held to rename the road.

This will include the unveiling of a specially made street road sign, which features the Royal Warwickshire Regiment emblem and the Fusiliers' famed white and red plume. Louis was a proud member of the regiment when he tragically lost his life coming to the aid of comrades.

At around 2.55pm, the parade will leave the newly named Fusilier Louis Carter Drive. They will then head for a Normandy service at the Royal Warwickshire Regiment memorial in nearby Riversley Park.
