A father-of-one has admitted violent disorder and assaulting a police officer during a protest in Stoke-on-Trent. Tyler Marchese, 21, pleaded guilty at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court to committing the offences on August 3.

Judge Sally Hancox told the defendant, of Norris Road, Tunstall, he will “almost inevitably” get a custodial sentence.

She said: “You have taken a very sensible step to accept your involvement in the events on August 3. Your sentence must be one that reflects your part in it.”

The judge adjourned the case for sentencing at the same court on September 27. Staffordshire Police recently said it had arrested more than 80 people and charged more than 30 following the disorder in Stoke-on-Trent on 3 August and in Tamworth on 4 August.

Riots and anti-immigration protests took place across the UK after three young girls were killed in Southport, Merseyside, on 29 July.

The action was fuelled by false claims on social media that the attacker was an asylum seeker.
