The Daily Show among first Emmy winners

Comedy Central extends Trevor Noah's Daily Show contract to 2022


Cape Town – The first leg of the Emmy Awards kicked off this weekend.

The creative arts ceremony honours technical and other achievements and were held on Saturday and Sunday. 

Dave Chappelle and Melissa McCarthy, earned trophies for their appearances on Saturday Night Live.

Chappelle was announced Sunday as best guest actor in a comedy series. He hosted the first SNL episode to follow last November's election.
McCarthy won the trophy for best guest actress on a comedy. She hosted SNL and portrayed then-White House press secretary Sean Spicer.

Guest acting awards for a drama series also were announced.

The winners are Gerald McRaney for his role on This Is Us and Alexis Bledel for The Handmaid's Tale.

Westworld and Stranger Things take an early lead with five awards each, followed by The Night Of with four, with Big Little Lies and Veep both on three. 

Westworld won Special Visual Effects, Hairstyling, Make-up, Sound Mixing, and Interactive Media, while Stranger Things, a homage to 80s horror, won Theme Music, Title Design, Casting, Picture Editing and Sound Editing. 

The Night Of, about a man who wakes up after a one-night stand with a stranger to find her murdered, won Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Picture Editing.

The Daily Show scooped the award for Short Form Variety Series for The Daily Show – Between the Scenes

The main Emmy Awards ceremony will air 17 September Sunday with host Stephen Colbert.
