Damian Garcia is reportedly a summer transfer target for Rangers - with the midfielder currently in the midst of a contract dispute at top Uruguayan club Penarol.

After helping the side's youth team win the U20 Copa Libertadores in 2022, the 20-year-old has now firmly established himself at senior level making 17 appearances so far this season. The holding midfielder was also a part of Uruguay's victorious U20 World Cup winning side last year, where they beat Italy in the final.

And with Philippe Clement planning a squad overhaul at Ibrox ahead of the new season, South American football journalist and writer Nathan Joyes claims Garcia is on the Light Blues radar as he approaches the final six months of his deal at Penarol. The Ibrox giants have already completed their first signing of the summer in the shape of Fluminense wing-back Jefte while Godoy Cruz's Chilean defender Thomas Galdames is also believed to be target.

Talks over a new contract for Garcia at Penarol have stalled, with the player's agent Edgardo Lasalvia recently stating that Garcia's weekly wage barely covers his rent. Lasalvia has also revealed interest from clubs in the MLS and Mexico in Garcia as he looks to facilitate a move.

"I really like the MLS for Damian, but there are some other things from Mexico and some other markets", he told Sport 890. "Damián cannot pay rent and has to help his mother who cleans floors. He earns less than a player of mine at Miramar (fellow Uruguayan Premier Division side).

"What happens is that the contracts expire and you have no obligation to renew. And even less so if you offer me two pesos, like the vice president did. He offered Damián García two pesos for renewal."

Penarol vice president Eduardo Zaidensztat has confirmed the player has a number of suitors but is still hopeful he will remain with the club beyond December. Last week he said: "Damian is an extraordinary kid. We have received inquiries from several teams. He has a contract until the end of the year but we have not agreed to renew it and we will have to meet with Damian. He is a club player."
