Dan Walker has plenty to celebrate after a million people apparently tuned into his new show about missing people.

The Channel 5 presenter posted a message on Twitter thanking everyone for the “amazing numbers” for Vanished.

The Crimewatch-style programme, which looks into missing persons cases across the UK, started on Thursday (30 March) and viewers were gripped.

It included an interview with Joan Lawrence, whose daughter Claudia vanished 14 years ago.

Sharing a tweet saying that a million people watched the first episode, Walker said: “Amazing numbers for a new show! WOW.

“Thanks for watching, thanks to everyone who was willing to take part and we’ll see you next Thursday at 9pm on @channel5_tv.”

He said in another post: "Just wanted to say ‘thank you’ for all the lovely comments about #Vanished.

"We hope it helps someone. So many cases to get through. Some new & some well known like Claudia Lawrence, missing for 14 yrs. Tonight her amazing mum, Joan, talked about hope."

Fans flocked to Twitter to praise the show.

One tweeted: "What a great programme. Dan Walker is both empathetic and sensitive to the missing people’s families. The perfect person for the job. Let’s hope people can be reunited and soon."

Another posted: "Just watched #Vanished with @mrdanwalker. A great example of useful, public service telly."
