A new exhibition of portraits of Royal Ballet dancers captures them with a photographer’s eye - and a dancer’s.

Andre Uspenski was a member of the Royal Ballet himself before he retired as a dancer in 2015. Now working as a photographer, his collection of portraits of members of the company uses light and shadow to explore the dynamics of the human form.

Uspenski, who is from St Petersburg, became a member of the Royal Ballet in 2002. He photographed his colleagues in rehearsals throughout his dancing career, and after his retirement was asked to become an in-house photographer by the Royal Ballet.

The exhibition features portraits of his friends and colleagues from the Bolshoi Ballet, Mariinski Ballet, Berlin State Ballet and Royal Ballet. Amongst those pictured are Steven McRae, Thiago Soares and Iana Salenko.

Andre Uspenski: A Dancer’s View is at The Old Truman Brewery from April 28 to May 16;
