Dancing with the Stars: Trump praises Sean Spicer’s ‘great try’ after he is voted off reality series

Donald Trump has praised Sean Spicer’s “great try” in the aftermath of his elimination from Dancing with the Stars.

The president tweeted “We are all proud of you” after the former White House press secretary was voted off the series, which is the US version of Strictly Come Dancing.

Trump additionally deleted a tweet published several hours before in which he encouraged his followers to vote for Spicer.

“A great try by Sean Spicer,” Trump tweeted. “We are all proud of you!”

In response, Spicer expressed his thanks. “I can’t begin to express how much your continued support has meant, especially during my time on Dancing with the Stars,” Spicer wrote.

Spicer was eliminated from Dancing with the Stars in his ninth week on the show, following a dance-off against country music singer Lauren Alaina.

His final appearance saw him perform an Argentine tango to Destiny’s Child’s “Bills Bills Bills” and a foxtrot to One Direction’s “Story of My Life”.

Spicer’s run on the programme has been plagued with controversy, with the show’s host Tom Bergeron writing on Twitter that his casting was “not my call”.

Bergeron also criticised US broadcaster ABC’s decision to recruit Spicer, adding that he had always hoped Dancing with the Stars would be a “joyful respite from our exhausting political climate and free of divisive bookings from any party affiliations”.

The famous faces still competing for the Dancing with the Stars trophy include Dawson’s Creek actor James Van Der Beek and Kel Mitchell, of Nineties sitcom Kenan & Kel.
