Danes reveals the Homeland finale scene you didn't see

Warning: this article contains spoilers from the Homeland season seven finale.

Homeland's last season finale shook fans and left us on a very ambiguous note as we saw Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) released from a Russian prison.

While we never actually get to see what happened to her in the preceding seven months in prison, star Danes has revealed that there was material that would have clarified things.

"We actually filmed a lot of material that was ultimately cut," she told TVLine. "We shot a number of scenes in the prison, where she is really mad... and it was all for naught.

"I think that did inform that final moment, so it was a lot of toil and effort that could have been spared. She's deeply disassociated and on the outer of her illness, but she's probably rapid cycled many times over and has suffered multiple traumas in addition to the raging chemical imbalance.

"She's been in isolation, I'm assuming, and experienced profound abandonment, so all of that cumulatively amounts to something pretty heinous.

"I guess [when the EPs were] in the editing room, they thought it'd be more powerful for the audience to imagine what she had endured for those seven months, rather than overtly, explicitly articulate it."

Danes confirmed back in April that the upcoming eighth season of Homeland would be its last, though in her new interview walked them back somewhat.

"It's not absolutely finite," she said of the prospect of it being the last. "That's been the template in my mind, [but], at the same time, who knows?"

Meanwhile, one of the show's stars, Navid Negahban, recently told Digital Spy that Homeland will be remembered as a "pivotal" moment in US TV.

Homeland airs on Showtime in the US and on Channel 4 in the UK.
