A “much-needed” safe pedestrian crossing over a busy road near Gloucester will be discussed tomorrow (January 30) at a joint meeting set up to solve residents' problems in Coopers Edge. The three parishes which cover Coopers Edge have recently set up a joint committee to address local issues.

For the time being this will be held every two months and the next meeting is due to take place at the Coopers Edge Community Centre at 7pm on January 30. All members of the public are welcome to attend.

And the meeting will discuss Gloucestershire County Council’s response to a petition signed by more than 600 people calling for a safe crossing on Lobleys Drive. Residents say the road has become a ‘rat run’ for not just residents but people commuting to work in the business park and further afield.

It is especially busy in the mornings just as local children head to the nearby Coopers Edge School. The petition, which was launched by local resident Alison Peeters, was presented to highways chiefs by County Councillor Robert Vines (C, Brockworth) in November last year.

She said: “Each day, school children, the elderly, local residents and the disabled brave a gruelling journey across this busy road. This places our most vulnerable population in unnecessary danger. The absence of a crossing is indeed personal to many in Coopers Edge including myself, as we worry daily about the safety of our children and elderly while getting to school or simply crossing the road”.

Hucclecote Parish Council also supports the call for a crossing. Chas Townley, chairman of Coopers Edge liaison committee said: “Top of the agenda is pursuing the adoption of highways and also the transfer of public open Space, play areas from the developers to Stroud District Council and Tewkesbury Borough and also the allotments to Coopers Edge Trust.

“We will also be considering the County Council response to the petition for a pedestrian crossing of Lobleys Drive at the junction with Typhoon Way. We will also be considering the issue of flooding of Lobleys Drive on Monday, January 6.

“In line with normal parish council practice we have included a session for public participation at the beginning of the meeting, it would be helpful if anyone who is interested in raising an issue could contact me either by direct message or email: councillor.townley@hucclecotepc.gov.uk

“The committee will be reporting the outcome of meetings to Brockworth Parish Council, Hucclecote Parish Council and Upton St Leonards Parish Council asking them to endorse and approve any recommendations the committee makes.

“The Coopers Edge Trust has also been invited to nominate a trustee to attend meetings.”
