Tom Cruise gets a lot of credit for doing his own action scenes, but nobody considers his devastating impact on the stunt double community. All of those grizzly men sat at home twiddling their mangled thumbs when they should be leaping out of helicopters and barrel-rolling through war zones. It’s a crying shame.

Daniel Craig gets that. That’s why he leaves the bulk of James Bond’s insane car chases to the professionals. In a new interview with Top Gear magazine, the No Time To Die star offered an insight into the process.

Asked how he managed to act and drive at the same time, Craig told the title: “You know we fake it, don’t you? We’re not allowed to do that any more, although I do go driving.

“I was allowed to donut the DB5 in Matera, which was great.”

The man who actually risks life and limb in Bond is called Mark Higgins, and he’s been behind the wheel since 2008’s Quantum of Solace. We sat down with him this week, and discovered some of the tricks they pull to achieve those death-defying car chases (like pouring Coca-Cola on the floor to get better traction.

Elsewhere in the Top Gear interview, Craig spoke about how No Time To Die will thread with Casino Royale and tie up his tenure as Bond.

He said: “I always had in the back of my mind a story I wanted to tell, and… it kind of happened.

“We have a through line. And this movie is about tying all those ends up, about reconnecting him to Casino [Royale], really, and that’s what we’ve managed to do.

“There’s a big emotional journey for him in it.”
