Daniel Day-Lewis comes out of acting retirement to star in son's movie

"Anemone," which Day-Lewis also cowrote with his son, marks his first acting role in seven years.

The legend returns.

Daniel Day-Lewis is widely regarded as one of the greatest actors of his generation, having been the only performer to win three Best Actor Oscars. But he hasn't made a movie in seven years, sticking to his intention to retire from acting after 2017's Phantom Thread. Now, that's all about to change as Day-Lewis returns to the screen to star in his son Ronan Day-Lewis's directorial debut, Anemone.

Focus Features and Plan B are partnering on the film, and they announced their plans on Tuesday. The father-and-son duo cowrote the script, which, according to a press release, "explores the intricate relationships between fathers, sons and brothers, and the dynamics of familial bonds."

Day-Lewis will star alongside Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings), Samantha Morton (The Serpent Queen), Samuel Bottomley (How to Have Sex), and Safia Oakley-Green (She Said).

Ahead of the release of Phantom Thread in 2017, Day-Lewis announced his intention to retire from acting. He had previously retired once before, leaving the business from 1997 to 2000. Earlier this year, he made a rare public appearance to honor two-time collaborator director Martin Scorsese, during which the auteur suggested that there could be time for "one more."

The elder Day-Lewis has long held a fascination with fathers and sons. Two of his Oscar-winning performances, in Lincoln and There Will Be Blood, deal strongly with the theme. Additionally, he famously suffered a breakdown during a performance of Hamlet in 1989, later explaining that the metaphorical toll of seeing his father's ghost onstage had caused the incident.

Further details, including a potential release date, are still to come.
