Daniel Farke directed a jibe at Coventry City after seeing his Leeds United side comprehensively outplay them at Elland Road.

The German manager gloated in his post-match press conference that his players were “all over” the Sky Blues – a fact that few visiting fans could argue against – but then appeared to have a dig at the Midlands club by expressing his relief that his goalkeeper was “still awake” when he was tested for the first time in the dying minutes of the 3-0 rout, adding that it was the first time he’d realised he was on the pitch.

Put to him that it was the perfect performance from his side, Farke said: “Yes, a very good performance, a very mature performance. I thought we were excellent in the first half, all over them and didn’t allow them to have one chance. We were pressing and counter pressing and really good in possession, scored a fantastic team goal and created many chances.

“Yes, we could have buried the game in the first half but then it was important to stay on it and start again on the front foot in the second half because last year in the same home game we were 1-0 up and finished 1-1, so we wanted to go strong into the second half.

“We got an excellent second goal and took the foot off the gas a bit after this and could have done with a bit more possession and composure in possession. After we went 2-0 there was about 25 minutes where we controlled everything against the ball and were really, really rock solid.

“Perhaps our decisions and the passing was not that great, otherwise we could have dominated the game even more. But I am not too annoyed with us today because it was understandable because we had many players out today, and some players with injury problems during the week.

“We have three games in six days so it was understandable that we took the foot off the gas and wanted to be rock solid. Then we scored the third goal, a really good counter attacking goal.”

He added: “I’m really pleased that we allowed a really dangerous side their first chance in the game in the 93rd minute with a strike (from Brandon Thomas-Asante). Thank god Illan Meslier was still awake, so umm, I also realised that he was on the pitch then! So overall, yes, a very good performance.”
