The BBC's genealogy series Who Do You Think You Are had its crowning (ahem) moment when they revealed that EastEnders and I Believe in UFOs star Danny Dyer has royal ancestry.

The actor, who is descended from Edward III in a complicated way, is about to front a two-part documentary series called Right Royal History, which looks like it won't take itself too seriously, judging from the promo shoot.

But we should take his heritage seriously, according to the man himself.

Appearing on today's (January 19) instalment of Dermot O'Leary's BBC Radio 2 show, the Mick Carter actor said: "I’m a royal man… Oh yeah, I’m a saint as well, I’ve got the blood of a saint and you can make of that what you will.

"There’s been a bit of bad press around it, maybe, me ‘dumbing down history’ [but] I don’t understand that more, because I’ve got a working class accent, is it?

"I just think these people, the establishment, can’t bear the idea that I am 110,000th in line to the throne – and they need to start accepting it. The revolution starts now with me."

He was joking though, as when he was later asked if he takes his royal heritage seriously, the actor replied: "Not really. It’s quite remarkable news, but of course I don’t go bowling around with my ruff on."

Now, that'd be a sight to see.

Danny's new show is being described as a "right nutty royal caper", in which he will immerse himself in Elizabethan culture by dressing in traditional olde garb, eating whatever food they ate and reconnecting with the legacy of his 30x great-grandfather William the Conqueror.

There's also going to be a cameo from his daughter, Love Island star Dani Dyer.

Danny Dyer's Right Royal Family will begin on January 23 on BBC One.
