Warrington Wolves' transfer demands for Danny Walker have been branded as "ridiculous" after they rejected a bid from NRL outfit Canberra Raiders. The Super League side has knocked back an approach from the Green Machine after they made a play for the England international.

The Canberra Times has reported that the club has now walked away from plans to sign Walker after baulking at their transfer demands. Canberra, who have previously paid fees for John Bateman and George Williams, were willing to pay a sizeable fee, thought to be in the region of £150,000.

However, Warrington are understood to want a fee in excess of £200,000, which would make him one of the most expensive players of all time. Canberra paid less for Bateman, Williams and their most recent British purchase, Morgan Smithies, to secure their moves away from Super League to the NRL.

Walker, who is under contract until the end of 2026, has made his England debut and is in contention to make the Super League Dream Team this year.

Of course, Warrington do risk losing him for free in two years time, should Walker crave a move down under to test himself. They would also have less bargaining power to negotiate should clubs come calling next year.

But speaking to the Warrington Guardian, Sam Burgess said: “He’s been approached by clubs from Australia but it’s a situation we’ve got in hand at the moment.

“It’s a problem a lot of clubs will get with a lot of players from clubs in the NRL if they don’t stand up for something. He’s got a contract so if they want him, they’re going to have to make it worthwhile.”
