Former N-Dubz star Dappy has been given a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to waving a knife in a public place during a row with his girlfriend last month.

The rapper, whose real name is Costadinos Contostavlos, was arrested after police were called to an incident that took place at the couple's home in Hatfield, Hertfordshire during the early hours of May 10.

In mobile phone footage of the incident that was recorded by a witness, Dappy was shown carrying a large butcher's knife with a curved blade.

Hertfordshire police confirmed at the time that no-one was seriously injured in the altercation.

Appearing at Luton Crown Court via video link from Peterborough Prison earlier this month, Dappy pleaded guilty to the knife charge and not guilty to common assault on his partner Imani Campbell, which was accepted by the prosecution.

A further charge of using threatening words and behaviour was discontinued by the Crown.

During sentencing today (June 26), the former Celebrity Big Brother contestant was given a nine-month suspended sentence for two years and was ordered to attend a Building Better Relationships course.

According to ITV News, Dappy's partner Imani spoke in his favour during sentencing, telling Judge Nigel Lithman QC: "He takes care of me, he takes care of my daughter, he takes care of us. I couldn't ask for a better father for my daughter."

The judge then told Dappy: "On balance I am not going to send you to prison today."
