We still don't know when it's arriving on Netflix, but season three of Daredevil has just welcomed a new, very important cast member in the shape of Joanne Whalley.

Deadline reports that the Wolf Hall actress is set to join the series, following a nod to her character in the final episode of The Defenders.

If you cast your minds back to The Defenders' climax, you'll remember that Daredevil – aka Matt Murdock – came very close to death indeed.

In the final scene of the episode, Matt was shown recovering in hospital with a nun by his side, who then calls for "Maggie" off-screen.

And this is where Joanne comes in – as the actress is set to join the series as Matt's mother (and nun) Sister Maggie, who first appeared in the Born Again comics arc.

Marvel TV boss and executive producer Jeph Loeb is pretty excited to have Whalley on board to help nurse Murdock back to health, admitting the show was "fortunate" to get her.

"We are big fans of Joanne's work and are fortunate that someone of her calibre will be joining our already talented family," he said, with showrunner Erik Oleson agreeing: "Joanne is a rare talent and a terrific creative collaborator.

"Watching her bring her role to life has the writers all pinching ourselves."

Season three of Daredevil is expected to hit Netflix later this year, and considering filming had already begun back in November, we don't think we'll have too long to wait until it does.
