Note: This article contains spoilers for Dark Heart's series finale.

The series finale of Dark Heart finished on a major cliffhanger on Thursday night (November 15), even though ITV is yet to confirm a second series.

The sixth episode ended with Juliette Wagstaffe (Charlotte Riley) calling her brother DI Will Wagstaffe (Tom Riley) from where she's been sectioned following her psychotic break.

Looking down at him from her window, she told him that he had no idea who their parents really were. "There's things I could tell you about them. There's things that I could tell you that would curdle your blood," she said before laughing manically.

Will looked up at the window in horror, not knowing if it was just her psychosis talking or if she genuinely knew something about their parents' unsolved murder – and that's where the series ended.

It's an ending that clearly alludes to a second series, but ITV is yet to confirm the show's renewal. Still, after that cliffhanger, the demand from fans is certainly there...

When filming the first season, creator and writer Chris Lang told the Radio Times that the intention was for the drama to go on for three, four or five series as the mystery of Will and Juliette's parents unfolds.

"Obviously now we want the mystery of what happened to his parents to be a multi-series," he said.

Let's hope fans – and Chris – get their wish...
